Natal

Natal

Moreso than any other city of Brazil, the story of Natal is a story of military arms. Founded as a fortress to combat French smugglers and subject to multiple attacks in the Dutch invasion of Brazil, Natal has long been recognized for its strategic significance. Not only is it the New World port closest to Europe, but virtually all ships traveling from Panama or New York toward the Indian Ocean must pass within mere kilometers of Natal on their journey. Construction of modern seaplane and naval bases concluded in 1930 and 1932 respectively, and these served as the primary facilities through which Brazil participated in the Allied anti-submarine effort. Since the war's end Natal has remained a center of Brazil's innovation in military aviation, and serves as the de-facto headquarters for collaborative efforts between Brazil and the OFN.
