Zagreb

Zagreb

Croatia is said to be one of the victors of World War Two. Why then, does Zagreb suffer such hardship? The birthplace of Ustaše and the primary center of Croatian culture, Zagreb flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

But since the war, fascist government has ruthlessly oppressed the non-Croat minorities in the city, while communist rebels continue their campaign in the countryside. In part because of this violence, an increasing number of Croats have immigrated to Zagreb in recent years.

But while the city grows, its economy stagnates, corroded by violence, incompetent bureaucracy, and Italian pressure. As the very foundations of the Croatian State are increasingly questioned, Zagreb seems ever more destined for upheaval.
