Okayama

Okayama

From humble beginnings in the Muromachi period, Okayama became the face of the antiquated Bizen Province of old Japan and witnessed several battles for supremacy during the turbulent times of the Sengoku Period due to its strategic position and resources. Perhaps known so until the abolition of the feudal system under the new Meiji government, Okayama was the site of the Okayama Domain under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate, ruled by the Ikeda lords of the Himeji Domain, a bustling castle town watched over by the greatest castle of all, the Okayama Castle.

Today the capital of the aptly-named Okayama Prefecture, the city witnessed little devastation in the Greater East Asian War, propelling itself into its position today within the economic goals of the Japanese, who have invested greatly into its development.
