Thimphu

Thimphu

Like the rest of the young Bhutanese kingdom, Thimphu did not begin as a wholly unified city, but rather an assorted collection of hamlets lined along the valley. It was only in 1885 when these settlements solidified their role in the history of Bhutan, as the site of the victorious leader Ugyen Wangchuck, brought about the unification of Bhutan and proclaimed himself King.

Even before the waning and now smothered era of the British presence across India, Thimphu has been the site of all expeditions from foreign powers. First hosting the Chinese, then the British, and now the Japanese and the Azad Hind, perhaps soon the city may never truly hear the silence free of foreign attachment it so desperately seeks.
