Kankoo

Kankoo

For 800 years Hamhung lay protected by stone walls that encircled the birthplace of the Joseon dynasty and kept her safe and isolated from the mountains and rivers. Those walls were shattered in June of 1906 when the Japanese sought to remould the city for their purposes, and Kanko was born from her rubble - a vital artery of the Empire in the peninsula, connecting fertiliser factories, hydroelectricity plants, and port facilities to create one of the largest industrial clusters in Korea.

Since the end of the war, Kanko has expanded further and further to feed the voracious appetite of the New Order in Asia, exploding in population and sprawl. Between the Seongchon River to the west and the Holyeon stream to the east, road networks bulldoze through the landscape in rigid grids, obliterating the historical urban centre and replacing them with monotonous blocks of dormitories and malls, more reminiscent of the New World than the Old. Despite this, the city continues to grow with rural migrants flocking desperately for a chance at the new life, and her overlords remain pleased.
